Mimicry Exercise Experiment #2
Posted on May 29th, 2009 No commentsToday, I mimiced a page or two of Sophie Kinsella’s The Undomestic Goddess. (See these posts for more info: Mimicry Description, Mimicry Exercise #1.) This story uses first person, present tense and is British. I found this one easy to mimic. I LOVE first person, present tense. It flowed. I also love the heroine and have read this story a few times, making it easier to mimic the voice, thoughts and tone.

Really, there isn’t much to say about this one, except: I want to write all first person, present tense all the time!
I did notice there was a lot of self-talk. I think that is one of the things that really makes first person work. There has to be a lot of self-talk–a lot of inner dialogue going on which is important to the story and adds that extra layer to the characters.

Book Review: Remember Me?
Posted on January 13th, 2009 4 commentsBook review for Remember Me?
By Sophie KinsellaI love this book! Chick lit isn’t dead, it’s simply a fact that nobody can keep up with pros like Kinsella. For example, take the amnesia angle. Been done before, right? Blah. Who can make that interesting, fresh, novel and new? Sophie Kinsella. The amnesia angle has never been done quite like this before.
The main character, Lexi, loses the past three years of her life. In most peoples’ lives, this would be no big deal. However, for Lexi it is. She has undergone some MAJOR changes in this time-frame. It is safe to say that she is no longer the same person. She’s gotten in shape, has killer fingernails, maybe had a little work done, drives, has her boss’s job, all new friends and lives in an amazing condo. Her new life seems to be some sort of fabulous dream. In real life, it’s a bit of a nightmare. But I won’t tell you why or I’ll spoil all the twists.
The plot is believable, the characters and their motivations, even the behaviours. As well, there is the odd evil co-worker involved and of course, personal growth for the main character.
All I can say is it’ll make you laugh, cry and not be able to put it down. I was sad when the book was done. I want more! It’s been weeks since I read it and I still want more. I know it’s a story I’ll read again. Enjoy!
