I don’t really do dark, either, but there is something human about The Road that overtakes the darkness. Yes, there are some images that are burned into my brain, but they aren’t gratuitous gore like you may find in some movies or books. As well, the brief simplicity of how he describes darker scenes whittles the horror away from the potential stab at your heart and mind aspects of it.

I’ve seen everyone talking about this one over at AQ, but I haven’t picked it up yet. I don’t do well with dark and depressing, so I’m not sure it’s for me. Although I repsect the opinions of those who say it’s the best book they’ve ever read, so I probably will get to it at some point. We’ll see

And as for the last line… well, it’s sort of a spoiler. Sorry. But you are a smart lady, you would have figured it out soon enough. And it doesn’t happen EVERY time, just like, 85% or so.

Sounds like an intriguing book – different from what I usually read. I’m glad you could get past the odd style to the real story underneath.
