  • An Honest Scrap I Am, I Am… Maybe

Posted on January 15th, 2010 jean 18 comments

Okay, the past few days have been pretty serious here on the Jean-o-blog-o-rama. Thank goodness Yvonne Osborne has stepped in to save you all. Yes, Yvonne very kindly awarded me with the Honest Scrap (Writer’s Edition) Blog Award. Aw. Warm and fuzzy butterflies tickling my tummy’s insides with drizzles of Bailey’s.

Is it too early to drink? Oh, heck. I’m a writer–drinking ‘rules’ don’t apply. (#1)

In accepting this award, and in lieu of sharing my prepared speech, I am to be ‘honest’ and tell you ten things about me and my writing. (But what in the heck am I going to do with this lovely acceptance speech?)

Because it is Friday and I am trying to convince you all that I am a drinking writer, I am going to play this award’s little game, but I am going to tinker with the rules. However, before I do that, I would like to point the finger at Yvonne as she broke the rules first. Those rules about honesty are useless in their shattered state on the floor, their little shards digging into my knitted granny slippers. (#2)

    That’s right. Game on.

Your job is to determine what is actually true (or ‘honest,’ if you must) facts about me and my writing. Do I really drink early in the morning? Do I wear granny slippers when I write/blog?

In case you think you ‘got’ me, those are not my feet, carpet, socks, ankles, nor slippers.
(My ankles are shaplier and my legs hairier.)

    Hmmm….

Here are 8 more questions to ponder with correct (and incorrect) options provided for your choosing convenience. And I probably don’t need to warn you that these options may be completely misleading or incredibly accurate in many ways, shapes and forms. Good luck!

    #3) When I can’t think where I should go next in a story, I:

    a) go for a walk
    b) stand on my head
    c) look at my outline
    d) brainstorm in a notebook
    e) all of the above

#4) While I write, I like to listen to:

    a) my own breathing to ensure I am still alive
    b) Frank Sinatra
    c) talk radio
    d) a variety of music
    e) all of the above, or none of the above–your choice

    #5) My biggest fan is:

    a) my mom
    b) my grandma
    c) my cat
    d) I don’t actually write, it is all a ploy to gain my own reality TV show

#6) I am penning an exposé about aspiring writers and the shenanigans they perform in their misguided efforts of attaining literary agent representation:

    a) true
    b) false

#7) I love to help out other writers in any way I can:

    a) true
    b) false

    #8) When I put down a first draft, I:

    a) crank it out in a few short weeks, errors be damned
    b) carefully fix all errors as I go
    c) research everything I need to know ahead of time so I don’t have gaps or holes in my story that need to be filled later
    d) go slightly insane and find I can’t think of the right word for things when I am living outside my work in progress
    e) forget to bathe in anything other than the vodka that dribbles from my slack lips

There you have it. Feel free to leave your guesses in the comment section. I bet you feel as though you know me quite well now. I’m off to go to a different town to pick up a textbook for a student I don’t know. Believe me?

    You should.

P.S. In a day or two, I’ll leave my answers in the comment section.

P.P.S. I forgot to pass this on. I’m supposed to pass it to 7 people. Because I am efficient, I am going to award this to the bloggers over at Good Girls, Bad Juju. There are is a lovely group of bloggers over there (Calista Taylor, Erin Kellison, Nancy Holnzer, Nicole Peeler, Rita Vetere, and Sean Cummings) and I feel that they could have a lot of fun with this little game, er, award. Enjoy!

    • Very cool ;)

    • I hope you and your blog buddies at Good Girls, Bad Juju are able to have a little fun with this one.

    • Oh yeah, and dreaded it is as I haven’t gotten that far with my ‘get organized’ ploy.

      -Charlie

    • Spoiler alert!

Okay, that was actually kind of freaky, Charlie. Are you actually someone I know disguised as someone I don’t? While you didn’t get all of them correct, there were some parts where you totally tapped into my personality!

    • Fun stuff!
      1 – No! No! No!
2 – Yes to the granny slippers :)
3 – all of the above
4 – none of the above
      5 – Grandma – maybe, yes, Grandma!
      6 – false – at least I hope….
      7 – TRUE!!!
      8 – A – but not for your latest piece – I’d say D, but I think that’s me :P

Good choice for the pass along!!
Is there room in the closet Calista??

    • Oh I thought I was supposed to answer the questions based on my personality….JUST KIDDING!!

Yeah I rock! LOL-I only know you through the cyber world but if we ever meant in person…I have a feeling we would get along stupendously!

      -Charlie Eve

    • Jemi, go girl! You earned yourself come bonus points. You must write multiple choice questions for a living. ;)

I think Calista might have gotten buried in the falling debris in my closet. However, she still seems to have AQ and Twitter access, so I’m not too worried about her.

    • I think so, Charlie.

Okay, ladies (and gent), that’s it! We’re going to have to convene at a writers’ conference somewhere. I’m voting for the Surrey International Writers’ Conference next October. (That would be in located BC, Canada and has big time literary agents coming to it, as well as editors and writers.) I’m cashing in pop (soda) cans for airfare, rolling my pennies for more Big Macs than I care to consume, hooking at the farm and ranch supply store for the conference fee, and checking into government creative-people-who-need-to-get-out-and-see-more-creative-types grants to cover the airfare. Are you with me?

    • Plenty of room in the closet! Well… sort of. I think there’s a ski up my… So, anyway, about that conference. Sounds like too much fun. Just looked at airfare and it looks like it’d be over $500 for me. Not quite sure I can swing that. But we’ll see! It’s a long way from now, and lots can happen between now and then. Right? : )

    • I broke the rules? What??? I did? Well then….

      1) No
      2) Yes
      3) A
      4) D
      5) A
      6) True
      7) True!!!!!
      8) D

Where are 9 and 10. This is totally unacceptable! :)

This was a very clever twist on the rules. You’re just too smart for me. I think I’ll go have a drink!

    • Sorry about the skis, Calista.

The conference adds up pretty quickly, doesn’t it? Maybe you’ll have a fabulous contract by then and a nice little advance and we can blanket everyone with your book info–making the conference pay for itself when everyone runs out to buy your fab book. OR maybe YOU could be a speaker! ‘What it’s like to be the new kid on the block.’ That would be cool. How do you feel about public speaking?

    • There was supposed to be 10? Oops. I thought there was only supposed to be 8. You did pretty good!

And I’ll bet you didn’t go get a drink, you tricky girl.

    • Answers:

#1: No. I actually drink very rarely as it makes me tired. So, no, I did not drink yesterday at any point. It’s just a lot of fun to joke that I am a drinking writer.

#2: Yes. I do tend to slip on my granny slippers when I write. I was truthful though in saying that those are not my slippers nor my feet, etc.

#3: This is a tricky one. A and D are correct. For the few times I outline, C is also correct. I have not tried standing on my head, although I have done yoga, which sometimes lands me on my head….

#4: A, B, and D are correct. It depends on my mood and what I am trying to accomplish in my writing. I can’t listen to talk radio as I have radio ADD: http://jeanoram.com/blog/2008/03/04/radio-add/

#5: C. Probably my cats because it means I sit on the couch with my laptop and they get to curl up beside me.

#6: No, I’m sad to say I’m not actually penning an exposé about aspiring writers.

#7: True. I do love helping out other writers.

      #8: Generally, A, and D.

I have to say, you all did amazing despite my trickery. In the end, Jemi was the winner by 0.5. (If people mentioned all the correct answers in the deliberations, they were awarded bonus points. I broke the rules all over the place creating this quiz, I had to stay consistent, right?)

Thanks for playing everyone. You made this fun twist on the honest scrap tell-all even more fun!

Cheerio dahlings. I’m off to slip on my granny slippers and swill a little sherry.

    • Hooray for bonus points!!

That was fun, Jean :) The conference sounds fabulous – I’d love to go, but… I’ll check it out :)
